A topographic survey records relevant site features and level information within an agreed scope. A contour map presents terrain elevations using lines joining points of equal elevation. The usefulness of either output depends on the underlying data.

Confirm whether the map uses field observations, supplied survey data or another dataset. Ask what reference system, units and limitations apply. A visually smooth drawing should not be mistaken for high-accuracy measurements.

Specify the deliverables
Agree the features to show, the coverage area, output formats and contour interval suitable for the data and purpose. If you need cross-sections or additional CAD layers, include them in the original brief.
